Embark on a Journey of Discovery with Wild Legacy Safaris
Wild Legacy Safaris was founded by husband-and-wife team, Craig and Goscelin Howson.
Craigs expertise in guiding, trailing and passion for sharing wild experiences with others coupled with Goscelin’s background in business and love for spending time in wild places makes for a dynamic team in the safari industry.
The name Wild Legacy refers both to Craigs personal background, as Craigs family have been involved in nature conservation for decades; and also to our belief at WLS that conservation of natural wild places and the life which inhabits them is critical in ensuring future generations inherit a legacy rich in biodiversity. We believe that sharing the wonders of our beautiful natural world with others heightens awareness of how incredibly special these places are, and how deserving they and their inhabitants are of being protected.

Our experienced guides are members of the Field Guides Association of South Africa and hold guiding, trailing and tracking qualifications.

Craig’s grandfather was a founding member of the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve (KPNR). The KPNR is part of the Greater Kruger National Park and shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park and other private reserves in the area.
This remarkable legacy sparked a passion and respect for the African bush and its wild inhabitants across generations of the family and inspired Craig to become the guide he is today.
Having made most of his favourite childhood memories on the family farm in the KPNR, it was a natural progression for Craig to enter the guiding industry, with the aim of sharing his knowledge and experiences of the natural world with others.
Craig’s mission is to provide guests with an immersive and informative safari experience to inspire an appreciation for our incredible wildlife and the natural beauty of wild places. A committed conservationist, Craig knows the importance of preserving our natural world for future generations. As such, besides exciting encounters with wildlife, safaris and experiences are also an opportunity to learn about and contribute to conservation efforts in the areas visited.
Craig is a member of the Field Guides Association of South Africa and qualified Lead Trails Guide. Walking in the bush is a particular passion of Craigs, as the thrilling experience of trailing elephants, rhinos, lions, and the like provides a more immersive experience of the habitats and habits of our exceptional wildlife.
Craig has an innate ability to put both guests and wildlife at ease. His bush knowledge is vast – running the full gamut of plants, insects, birds, and animals – opening your eyes to so much beyond the big five. He is just the sort of guide you want during the thrilling bush experiences such as watching a lion make a kill or staying calm when a grumpy elephant comes to investigate. Yet, it’s on the quieter excursions that Craig really shines – his storytelling skills and explanations of animal activity and behaviour bring the bushveld to life, when just a moment before it seemed silent and empty.
As South Africans we are truly spoilt by having access to the bush and wildlife. I have been fortunate to visit many different wilderness areas over the last 20 years. I have enjoyed the solo safari experiences but have realized since meeting and being guided by Craig that my understanding of the bush ecosystems was very superficial. Craigs knowledge, environmental empathy, and his ability to communicate has enhanced my appreciation and enjoyment of our wilderness areas. I would unreservedly recommend Craig for an unforgettable bush experience.
My daughters and I had the privilege of walking with Craig in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. It was the highlight of our visit- an experience to be treasured!
Craig is an exceptional guide who clearly loves what he does and is passionate about sharing his knowledge with guests. He is an expert in the field and his vast understanding of flora and fauna that call it home is astonishing. He was perfect with our teenagers – engaging in a way that kept them curious and excited about the adventure. His obsession with nature is infectious!
He has a wealth of experience, many amazing stories to tell and knows the area intimately. All this along with his tracking skills and eagle eye meant we did not miss a beat! Before setting off we were thoroughly briefed and his paramount ‘safety first’ rule ensured we felt secure at all times. Craig is competent and prepared, calm and professional – we always felt we were in the safest pair of hands.
We were lucky and had exceptional sightings, tracking rhino and coming across a leopard at 30m on foot was an amazing adrenaline rush, but Craig taught us to appreciate SO much more! We felt a part of Africa– walking along animal paths and riverbeds, learning about wildlife at close range whilst actively engaging in our surroundings. Craig showed us how to consider wind direction, terrain, vegetation and explained how animals were behaving. He has a gift for reading the bush and always interacts with it in a respectful way. We now appreciate the subtleties with heightened awareness and curiosity! Intriguing small details are often only spotted on foot- it’s the perfect way to experience the African wilderness.
Hand on heart, you will not be disappointed. I can’t speak highly enough of our experience and can’t wait to return. A walking safari with Craig is a must for the bucket list!
